speaking of kiwi music...

About seven or so years ago I interviewed an up-and-coming promising teenage musician for a weekly rag I was editing and working on. Hardly anyone had heard of this musician back then, but I had known her for a while. I was impressed with her attitude, maturity and her ability at such a young age and told her she would do well.

A few years later she edited a youth magazine and I realised she could write as well as sing.She was a freak. When she got her recording contract, I rang Tom Cardy of the Dominion Post and asked him to interview her. He had never heard of her, although he had heard of her dad, former All Black Bernie Fraser. Now this musician is combining writing and singing very well. Her first album generated four number one hits and she has just released her second album.

And the album has debuted at the top of the charts this week, knocking U2 off the top spot, and her single is the most played song on radio at the moment, and the highest charting kiwi single (and the only one, in fact) in the top ten. What other kiwi singer songwriter has done this?

update Bic Runga comes closest - although she had three debut number one albums, her first single from her second album wasn't the most played song on radio when her album was released - nor did she knock off the one of the top selling bands off the top of the album charts after a couple of weeks after their tour here.
