wealthy Irish rock star in a cowboy hat

Bono is the subject of a tirade from New York Times travel writer Paul Theroux who claims the U2 frontman doesn't have a clue how to solve poverty, let alone make it history. The article, in todays Press, is online here.
Theroux claims that Bono endlessly shouting for people to hand over money does nothing to solve the wider problem of poverty. Instead he claims that education will help the Third World.

Tell that to Pink Floyd.

Its not education, or money that will help the Third World. It is trade, which is why Bono's promoted organisation data, mentions trade.A lot. It is the unfair trade rules which keep Africa poor.

Theroux needs to do his research and get.on.message, instead of raving about how good life was like in Malawi in the 1960's.

Bono actually believes that debt relief and increased aid (except for emergency relief, obviously) should only be given to countries whose leaders are willing to provide complete transparency as to where the money is going.

Interesting story in the Herald, though, "Poverty rant annoys U2."It's lifted - unattributed - from an AP article which states that drummer Larry Mullins looks at his watch every time Bono does a rant on making poverty history. Look out for the rant on St Pats Day in Auckland.

Just as I thought, the other members of U2 are perfectly fine with Africans starving.

Meanwhile Bono is reported to have said that he may quit music and live on a fish farm.
