A friendly reminder from a child-less Minister

Steve Maharey reminds mums who want to stay at home with their preschool and school age kids that he would rather they got a real job or went back to work and stay there during the school holidays, and have the state parent their kids.

Because Nirvana forbid there should be any help for parents who don't have leave whenever their children have holidays.

Look, I'm no fan of Steve Maharey, but all he's doing is reminding people of government help they're entitled to and may not realise they can get. I don't see what's so wrong with that.

Nothing wrong with that at all - but what about a policy of paying "stay-at home mums(or dads)" by income splitting for tax purposes at the very least, or by including them in the policy as well by paying the care-giving parent instead of the care giver, so that couples are not comparatively financially worse off for bringing up their own kids.

I never see a media release stating that families who are earning below $35,000 can get food grants and other grants and advances (for things such as dentist bills and school uniforms) from Work and Income if they have less than $1400 in the bank.

Could that because it does not contribute to the economy in the way that pushing women into work does?
