The Liqour Licencing Authority has ruled that happy hours are illegal as they encourage people to drink more. No, really!
Actually, the ruling said that such promotions at student bars were likely to "encourage excessive drinking". In other words, the ruling appears to say that you dont have to prove that excessive consumption is actually likely to occur, or even that people drink more at happy hours.
Now that this ruling has surfaced, I look forward to rulings that ban smorgasboard meals, "all you can eat" meals at Pizza Hut, and "upsize meals" at McDonald's - in case this encourages overeating. I look forward to a ruling preventing people getting a coke at Burger King, then topping it up as many times as you like in case that encourages excessive drinking. I look forward to the banning of overtime as it encourages overworking, and one day sales at stores such as Briscoes as this encourages excessive spending.
Actually, I look forward to beer being $2.00 a pint 24 hours a day, and an overtime rate paid from the minute I start work, not the minute I'm supposed to finish.
