vatican hypocrisy?

The Vatican thinks that the riots over those cartoons is as equally deplorable as the cartoons themselves."Authorities might and should intervene eventually according to the principles of national legislation," the statement said. It want to crack down on newspapers who published the cartoons, and says governments should consider limiting press freedom on this issue. "The freedom of thought and expression, confirmed in the Declaration of Human Rights, cannot include the right to offend religious feelings of the faithful," the Vatican said.

Or should that be the unfaithful as well. "Real or verbal intolerance, no matter where it comes from, as action or reaction, is always a serious threat to peace."

Are you offended by this? Perhaps we should censor the Vaticans comments, given that many see it as intolerant, therefore a serious threat to peace. Just as well the Vatican doesnt have an embassy.

Dave, why do you think the Vatican is being hypocritical?

I questioned whether the Vatican was hypocritical, the ? is there on purpose. I think that when the Vatican says " real or verbal intolerance... as action or reaction, is *always* a serious threat to peace, and a lot of its reactionary statements have temnded to fuel division and highlight differences, as opposed to promiting peace, then that is saying one thing and doing another, particularly as the Vatican claims to promote peace.

Thats why I questioned it. Not that it changes my opinion of the Catholic Church in NZ, which is somewhat different from my opinion of the Vatican.

Whats your view Lucyna, you never said..

One might call it hypocritical to get married in a Catholic Church and then pour scorn on the Catholic Church from then on....(ie. biting the hand that feeds)?

Or are you just like the Editors of the Fairfax media and looking to promote interest in your site?

A lot less hyprocritical than many catholics, dare I say, who get married, christened and confirmed in the church - and drop out shortly after they get confirmed and just attend for weddings, funerals, Christmas and Easter.

that aside, I didnt pour scorn, I asked questions. And I question the Vatican, not the Church. Slight difference.

Ah, so that is what the ? meant. I just can't see any hypocrisy in the statement, so I was wondering what you meant. The way I read it, what the Vatican is saying is: don't incite, don't let yourself be incited and governments, use legal means to prevent incitement and violence. Which is what I'd expect from the Vatican.

Actually, the Vatican does have embassies, including one in Wellington. So, you do have somewhere to protest.
