Who is the "last cab off the rank" now?
It appears Helen Clark wants a small coalition. Like one with the Progressives and United Future. Possibly even NZ First if Winston changes his mind on a few things. It appears that the Maori Party is out of the coalition but may get confidence and supply, with the Greens and NZ First some sort of agreement as well. The Maori Party will do better than the Greens, because if it wasn’t for the Maori Party, Don Brash would be Prime Minister. What decisions the Maori Party make may well influence what Winston has to offer.
Except this, I suppose
In a victory speech on Saturday Mr Harawira said the first thing he would do when he got to Parliament was push for the creation of a separate Maori Parliament, set up in Te Tai Tokerau to work alongside and be equal to the existing Parliament.
I think the Greens realise that the chances of a cabinet post is as unrealistic as Rodney Hide becoming Prime Minister - even if Nandor gets back in. The party is now "'the last cab off the rank" And the only reason the Greens are out is because the other parties have a part to play to make this Government work. NZ First and especially United Future don’t see eye to eye with the Greens. In fact there's only one party outside Labour that does, and it only has one MP.
So the possibility of a coalition agreement may be also be just as unrealistic for the Greens, who are starting to become less relevant than the other minor parties. Helen Clark has to realise that New Zealand is not as liberal as she makes out, with just over 5 percent of the population voting for parties to the left of Labour.
Interesting, though, that if Rodney Hide hadn't won his seat,Labour's Charles Chauvel and the Prog's Matt Robson would have been in Parliament, according to Rodney.

That the greens are in parliament without even winning one electorate seats is one of the great downfalls of MMP.. no one had faith enough in the green MPS integrity to vote any of their members into an electorate seat..and yet they are now in a position to have their somewhat spurious members- in whom the voters had little faith.. making decisions about how our country runs. The greens are only in their because their party name sounds a nice idea.. and oh of course the dope smokers all voted green..are these really the type of people we want governing out country? MMP should at least have the qualifying post of winning one electorate seat and then go on percentages from there.. get rid of the dross. (pun)
I think the election results show a strong division of minds in the country.. and we should go back to the polls and have another vote with either a National or Labour tick on the voting form to determine who should be the
leading party in the country.
Hey Dave
As I said in my letter (abridged) to the Dompost the Sat before the election.
I love the greens energy policy, it's the dope and other crap I can't stand.
I wish that Lab and Nat had a coherant energy policy, unfortunatekly neither have.
In fact on this subject alone I think neither of them should be in power.
Unfortunately I had to vote national as it was the only credible alt to Labour to get helen out of power.
can I help it the 30% of NZ are stupid or dumb or what?
and some are friends of mine too!
best
Mike NZ
