Oh, the spin is making me giddy

John Bowis, boss of Save the Children, thinks parents discipline their kids to encourage good behaviour.

Really? I thought they smack their kids to discourage bad behaviour.

The spin is ridiculous. He was commenting on a survey, from Plunket and the Office of the Children's Commissioner shows that over 90% of parents and caregivers believe praising their children and leading by example are far more effective ways of encouraging good behaviour than physical discipline.

Except the survey doesn't show that, nor does it explain why parents think that. It shows that parents want to praise their kids for dong well. Nothing wrong with that, or course, but don’t call it discipline.

Perhaps they interviewed their own staff members and advocates.

The survey says parents prefer not to smack kids. It doesn’t say that 80% of parents are happy to because that question wasn't asked.

And we all know why, don't we?
Meanwhile a group who call thenselves "Every Child Counts" say that Sue Bradfords anti-smacking bill should go to a Select Committee.

I agree - if that were to be the end of it.

Thqnks Lucyna,

More and more groups are joining Every Child Counts, but I know of some that have expressed surprise at the groups opposition to smacking. Atleast one groups I have spoken to actually supports smacking but it is too chicken to speak out about it.

Hey dave
I went to listen to Stephen Franks and Sue Bradford at the pub thing one lunchtime.

Let me tell you it was scary.
they had all these women who all said they were from barnados or plunket.
They all were against child abuse and smacking and said it in the same sentence.
all said it in different ways.
daring anyone to say otherwise.
their attitude was if you don't agree with us you're toast or stupid.

I'm just an ordinary guy not a social commentator but if they people represent what those organisations then they don't represnt middle New Zealand.

I won't have a bar of any of their fundraising if they are such activists.

Rabid in attitude.
phew.
Fundamentalists Yeahhhhhh.
bad scene man.
best
Mike
