"No rubba" back on telly soon

Remember the silly 30 second "no rubba, no hubba hubba" ads on TV earlier this year? Well, the ads are "coming" back after a promising ejacu… umm, evaluation. No rubba no hubba hubba, yabba dabba doo! The whole point of the one million dollar campaign was to encourage kids to rubber up to avoid getting STD's.

Yep, the evaluation says that more kids are using condoms. The proof? Well, there is none actually. The evaluation was all done online, using an on-line group selected from people who had already registered with a survey and marketing site. So scientific.

And fewer than half said the campaign had "definately or probably" increased their likelihood of using condoms in the future. Which means most didn’t.

What about the kids who don’t have Internet access? They couldn’t be surveyed. But we do know that of a survey of 1100 sexually active kids in Auckland, less than half use condoms. See, folks, the kids are not worried about getting STD's, they`re more worried about getting pregnant. They`d rather use oral contraceptives and do not want to turn down sex because their partner is wearing a condom.

Sex education sux as well, say the kids. They`d rather have training in "condom negotiation" to stop them "feeling like a dork" if condoms are requested and refused. Of course the hubba site has lots of lovely pick up lines aimed at preventing kids feel like dickheads, advising them what to do if a partner says "no hubba with rubba".

Such as "Your partner might say ‘I don’t have any condoms’, you could respond by saying ‘I do’, or ‘we can buy some at the dairy, or the pub, or the supermarket’". Yeah, I can imagine two 15-year-olds trotting off to the pub….

Or "Finally, your partner might say ‘condoms are boring’. You could say ‘I’m sure we can think of ways to make them fun."

Like, the kids would say that?.

Rubba Hubba minister Annette King said last year New Zealand's rising rates of sexually transmitted infections will not just go away.

And they still haven't, rubba hubba or no rubba hubba.
