Civil Union vote 66-50

Well it was an interesting vote. Three people "no-voted" which is a bit different from abstained. All were Labour MP's and opponents of the bill.

Remember Ashraf Choudhary? He abstained at the final vote of the Prostitution Reform Bill. Yep, he was one who didn't turn up. Another was Winnie Laban. She opposed the Prostitution Bill right up until the last vote when she changed her mind.

The other one was Janet Mackey. Her daughter voted for it.

Interesting, though how the vote has been reported. As of this post, no one has reported who cast what vote, apart from this blog who has at least posted the names of the "no-voters".

Scoop reported the vote as 56-50. Another site had it right 66-50 with 3 no votes, or could it be that No Right Turn was half Right.

So, it's off to the Select committee for the Civil Union bill for hte next couple of momths. Many MPs who have supported this bill have supported it for the first reading have no intention of supporting it any further. For those who support this bill on the basis that it evens out discrimination are either telling lies or have not read the bill.

Those who have read the bills know damned well that the other bill to be voted on next week is the bill that evens up legal rights and discrimination. Some of the people who voted today haven't even read the bill.

It is touch and go whether this bill will pass. The first prostitution reform bill vote was 87 - 21. It passed by just one vote. However the lobbying for the Civil Union Bill will be stronger.
