United Future hops on the omnibus
United Future is going to fight the Civil Union bill. That’s what Peter Dunne told the Maxim Institute's conference on Political Correctness during the weekend. What Dunne didn't tell the conference, though, was that United Future supports the Omnibus Bill (an explanation is here). Could that be because Maxim opposes it as well, and sees that bill as part of the "political correctness gone mad"?
“Let’s be honest here," says Dunne against the Civil Union Bill, "this legislation is about one thing and one thing only - extending the rights and privileges of marriage to same-sex couples, without calling it marriage.”
Well, not really. The aim of the Civil Union Bill is to recognise and formalise same sex relationships. The aim of the Omnibus Bill is to extend legal rights and privileges of marriage to same-sex couples, without calling it marriage or civil unions - and United Future supports this.
United Futures position: Treat all unmarried couples as legally equivalent to married couples - just don’t refer to same sex couples as civil unions or call their relationships marriage.
