There's something about Mary

The Presdential debate was declared a draw. The biggest news in the blogosphere and in the media seems to be that Kerry mentioned the fact that Dick Cheney's daughter Mary is a lesbian. She is also an official in the Bush-Cheney campaign.

So what if she is a lesbian..

Kerry felt the need to defend himself, saying that the reference to Dick Cheney's lesbian daughter was made constructively and respectfully.

Like, "with respect, she's a lesbian". But why mention it if you think that a gay sexual orientation is not something shameful?

The candidates were asked if they believe homosexuality is a choice. President Bush, who thinks it is a choice, did not mention Mary Cheney. Then Kerry said,
"We’re all God’s children, Bob. And I think if you were to talk to Dick Cheney’s daughter, who is a lesbian, she would tell you that she’s being who she was, she’s being who she was born as. I think if you talk to anybody, it's not a choice."

He's wrong. Obviously Bush thinks it is not a choice.

In a statement Kerry later said, " I love my daughters. They love their daughter. I was trying to say something positive about the way strong families deal with the issue."

So why does Kerry have to back up his ideas with well-know people - he did it with Christopher Reeves in the last debate when he mentioned stem cell research.

And this from the October 26 issue of The Advocate:"
The difference between me and George Bush will be the difference to gay and lesbian couples and individuals across this country - whether rights are afforded them or whether or not they are discriminated against"

Both candidates consider marriage to be between a man and a woman. The difference is that Bush wants to ban gay marriage with a constitutional amendment, while Kerry wants to hand the issue over to the judiciary in individual states, which is happening at the moment.

Kerry also said: "I voted against [the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act] precisely because it was gay bashing on the floor of the U.S. Senate, and I said so"…..I’m going to be trying to pass hate-crimes legislation, and I’m for partnership rights and benefits and so forth."

Why is it we get absolute arseholes wanting to lead us.

have you been to the swiftboat vets web site.

I don't really favour Bush over kerry as they are both the best of a bad bunch but looking dispasionately at kerry and his flip flops and the swiftboat stuff he's worse than even the remaining Kennedy.

God help Americans if they do vote him in.
we shouldn't worry though Helen, says we live in a benign environment.
good old aunty Helen.
